Cirium Names Wizz Air World’s Most Emissions-Efficient Airline as It Unveils 2025 Sustainability Report

(IN SHORT) Wizz Air EMEA has released its FY25 Sustainability Report—third-party verified and packed with measurable environmental gains. The airline recorded an industry-leading CO₂ intensity of 52.2 g per passenger-kilometre, powered by a fleet whose average age is under five years and heavily outfitted with fuel-saving GTF engines. Having trialled Sustainable Aviation Fuel on select routes, Wizz Air targets a 10% SAF blend by 2030 and has laid out a net-zero roadmap for 2050 in line with ICAO goals. Leadership emphasizes tangible investments over marketing claims, while accolades from Cirium, World Finance, and CAPA underscore the carrier’s sustainability credentials. Growth in headcount and national diversity also reflects its social commitments.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUDAPEST, 2025-Jul-7 — /Travel PR News/ — Wizz Air EMEA—recognized as the region’s greenest carrier¹—has published its independently verified Sustainability Report for the year ending 31 March 2025, showcasing significant strides across environmental, social, and governance objectives. Highlighting its journey toward a net-zero future by 2050, the airline was also named the world’s most emissions-efficient operator by Cirium².

Fleet Modernization Powers Emissions Reductions
In FY25, Wizz Air achieved a sector-leading carbon intensity of just 52.2 g CO₂ per passenger-kilometre³, thanks to an ultra-young fleet averaging 4.7 years of age. Over two-thirds of its 231 aircraft—147 A321neos and 6 A320neos—feature Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, which cut fuel use and CO₂ emissions by 20% and reduce noise by half. Committed to running only neo-series jets by 2028, Wizz Air continues to outpace European peers in sustainable fleet renewal⁴. To mark 20 years with Airbus, the airline also revealed a bespoke livery celebrating past achievements and future tech.

Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
From October to December 2024, trial flights using SAF blends operated on key European routes in partnership with Moeve and World Fuel Services. Building on these tests, Wizz Air aims for a 10% SAF blend across all flights by 2030, aligning with ReFuelEU targets⁵.

Roadmap to Net Zero by 2050
On Earth Day, Wizz Air released its decarbonization roadmap—congruent with ICAO’s aspirational framework—calling on governments and industry to collaborate on clean-aviation innovations and infrastructure.

Leadership Perspective
“ESG isn’t a buzzword for us but a cornerstone of our strategy,” explained Dorottya Durucsko, Head of Government Affairs and Sustainability. “Our 2025 report underlines measurable progress—fuel-efficient aircraft, sustainable fuels, smarter operations—and rejects unproven gimmicks. We intend not just to stay among the world’s most efficient airlines but to set a new benchmark for responsible low-fare travel.”

Industry Recognition and Social Impact
In 2024 Wizz Air earned ‘Best Airline for Carbon Reduction’ at the World Finance Carbon Awards and its third consecutive CAPA Environmental Sustainability Award. Meanwhile, its workforce grew by over 2,300 new hires to more than 9,000 employees representing 112 nationalities, underlining its commitment to inclusive growth.
