Temporary A350 Deployment Bridges Delivery Gap as Lufthansa Sets Stage for Historic Fleet Renewal

(IN SHORT) Lufthansa Airlines is temporarily deploying six Airbus A350-900 aircraft from Frankfurt to service routes to Seoul, Shanghai, Denver, and Seattle as a stopgap measure to counter delayed aircraft deliveries. Four of the jets began operating from Frankfurt with the summer flight schedule, with additional aircraft planned for May and July. Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, highlighted that this move enhances passenger experience while the airline undertakes a major fleet renewal, with 61 new aircraft expected by the end of 2027. The A350-900 offers significant improvements in fuel efficiency—using roughly 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger per 100 kilometers—and reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 30% compared to earlier models, in addition to offering a quieter cabin environment. The deployment strategy ensures that passengers benefit from cutting-edge technology until the new fleet is delivered, with ongoing operations at both Frankfurt and Munich further expanding Lufthansa’s global connectivity.

(PRESS RELEASE) FRANKFURT, 2025-Apr-2 — /Travel PR News/ — Lufthansa Airlines has temporarily deployed six Airbus A350-900 aircraft from Frankfurt to bridge a delivery gap, enabling passengers to fly to international destinations such as Seoul, Shanghai, Denver, and Seattle. Four of these state-of-the-art jets have been in service since the summer flight schedule began, with two additional aircraft scheduled to join in May and July. The A350-900s commenced operations on routes to Seoul and Shanghai on March 30, while flights to Denver are set to start on May 1 and those to Seattle on July 1.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, explained, “By deploying the A350 from Frankfurt, we are effectively addressing the shortfall caused by delayed new aircraft deliveries. These modern Airbus jets offer our passengers an enhanced travel experience while we await the arrival of new long-haul aircraft. Over the next three years, we anticipate the largest fleet renewal in our history, with 61 new aircraft expected to be added by the end of 2027—averaging one new aircraft every two weeks.”

The A350-900 is designed for efficiency, consuming only around 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger per 100 kilometers, which helps reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 30% compared to older models. Additionally, these aircraft are significantly quieter. Currently, 30 Airbus A350-900s operate from Munich, and 14 more are slated to join that fleet by 2029, with those equipped with the new Allegris cabin serving exclusively from Munich.
