OAK now connected to Canada by Swoop, new, ultra low-cost carrier
Oakland, CA, 2019-Jan-28 — /Travel PR News/ — Officials at Oakland International Airport (OAK) today (January 23, 2019) announce that Oakland has been selected by ultra-low-cost Canadian carrier, Swoop, for service to Edmonton International Airport (YEG) in Alberta, Canada. Flights will operate 3-times-weekly on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.
The news came with the release of Swoop’s full summer schedule announcement, in which the airline revealed that it would begin seasonal air service from Oakland on May 26, 2019. The flight will operate on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, using a single class configuration. Of the aircraft’s 189 available seats, 39 are noted with “Extra Legroom.”
“The summer 2019 schedule focuses on realizing economies of scale,” said Steven Greenway, President of Swoop. “We have created a schedule that leverages our existing network while expanding to a limited number of strategic destinations.”
“It is with a great enthusiasm that we welcome Swoop and its new service to Edmonton International,” said Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “It is very exciting to begin 2019 by sharing that OAK’s global roster of destinations will now extend to Canada. We trust that business and leisure travelers in both metropolitan areas will benefit from this new connectivity, and we look forward to growing with our partners at Swoop as it expands further into U.S. and Canadian markets.”
“Swoop’s growing list of Canadian and U.S. routes from Edmonton International Airport is an investment in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region,” said Tom Ruth, President and CEO of Edmonton International Airport. “Popular destinations and low fares are creating exceptional travel options while supporting tourism and business growth in our region.
Swoop is owned by WestJet, Canada’s second largest air carrier, and has been in operation since June 20, 2018.
