ANA Holdings and Joby Aviation Forge Joint Venture to Launch Electric Air Taxis in Japan

(IN SHORT) ANA Holdings and Joby Aviation are forming a joint venture to launch electric air taxi services in Japan, aiming to operate over 100 eVTOL aircraft in a phased national rollout beginning in Tokyo. Public demonstration flights of ANA-branded Joby aircraft will take place at Expo 2025 Osaka from October 1–13. Joby’s five-seat, zero-emission aircraft combine vertical takeoff with high-speed cruise, offering a quiet, clean alternative to ground transport that can reduce hourlong trips to minutes. The partners will work with government and private collaborators—such as Toyota—to build the required vertiport network, train pilots, and establish maintenance support, all under ANA’s rigorous safety standards.

(PRESS RELEASE) TOKYO, Japan/ SANTA CRUZ, CA, 2025-Aug-5 — /Travel PR News/ — ANA Holdings (ANA HD) and Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) today announced plans to form a joint venture that will introduce electric air taxi services across Japan. Together, the partners aim to deploy more than 100 of Joby’s zero-emission eVTOL aircraft over the coming years, creating an integrated aerial mobility network.

The collaboration will kick off in Tokyo and expand in phases nationwide, with public demonstration flights of ANA-branded Joby aircraft scheduled October 1–13 at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. These demos—featuring vertical takeoffs, wingborne transitions and landings—mark the first step toward addressing Japan’s urban transportation challenges with safe, quiet, and efficient air taxis.

“Air taxi service will directly contribute to solving Japan’s urban mobility issues and offer travelers a new, efficient mode of transport,” said Koji Shibata, President and CEO of ANA HD. “We look forward to establishing our joint venture with Joby Aviation and showcasing demonstration flights at the Expo, all while upholding the highest safety standards.”

“Japan’s blend of ancient wisdom and modern ambition makes it the perfect launchpad for redefining urban air mobility,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation. “By teaming up with ANA, we’re laying the groundwork to deliver our aircraft and build a full air transport ecosystem across Japan’s dynamic cities.”

Joby’s eVTOL aircraft take off vertically like helicopters and then transition to fast, airplane-style cruise at speeds up to 200 mph (320 km/h). With near-silent operation and zero emissions, these five-seat vehicles promise to slash travel times—turning hourlong car journeys into minutes—while reducing noise and air pollution in densely populated areas.

To support the service rollout, ANA HD and Joby will collaborate with government bodies and private partners (including Toyota Motor Corporation) to develop vertiports, pilot training programs, and maintenance facilities.
