WTTC commends Egypt’s government on its efforts to improve security for tourists and hasten the recovery of its Travel & Tourism sector

LONDON, 2016-Mar-02 — /Travel PR News/ — Attending Egypt´s Tourism 2016 Conference ‘Planning for Growth’ on 22nd February in Cairo, Gerald Lawless, Vice Chairman World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), met with key leaders to discuss the recovery of the country’s tourism sector, focusing on security, tourism investment, cultural diversity and destination promotion.

Meeting with Prime Minister Sherif Ismail Mohamed, together with World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary General Taleb Rifai, discussions were held on measures to accelerate the recovery of tourism to Egypt and both organisations praised the government for the support being given to the sector.

Egypt is a magnificent tourist destination, which has recovered from setbacks in the past. Not only does Travel & Tourism contribute 12.8% to the country’s GDP, it also supports nearly three million jobs.  We commend the government on its moves to improve security for tourists, and we are confident that this investment in infrastructure will hasten the recovery of Egypt’s Travel & Tourism sector”, said Mr. Lawless.

UNWTO and WTTC presented to Prime Minister Sherif Ismail Mohamed the Open Letter on Travel and Tourism, which outlines the sector’s value as one of the world’s largest generators of jobs and a powerful driver of economic growth and development. The Open Letter, which was first introduced in 2011 as part of a strategic partnership between UNWTO and WTTC, has been presented to 81 Heads of States. These meetings aim to elevate Travel & Tourism onto the global agenda, as a sector that produces $7.8 trillion in GDP and employs 1 in 10 jobs on the planet.
