UN Tourism Celebrates Designation of 2027 as International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism

UN Tourism has joined its Members in celebrating the establishment of 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism.

(IN SHORT) UN Tourism has designated 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism. The announcement was celebrated at UN Tourism’s Madrid headquarters with ambassadors from 24 Member States, including the Ambassador of Uzbekistan, which sponsored the resolution. The resolution, adopted by 86 Member States at the UN General Assembly, highlights tourism’s role in development and sustainability. UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the collaborative achievement and the importance of sustainable growth in the tourism sector. The UN General Assembly has tasked UN Tourism with leading the organization and implementation of the International Year.

(PRESS RELEASE) Madrid, Spain, 2024-Jun-22— /Travel PR News/ — UN Tourism has announced the establishment of 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism, joining its Members in a celebratory event at its Madrid headquarters. The event saw the participation of ambassadors from 24 Member States, including His Excellency Farrukh Tursunov, Ambassador of Uzbekistan, who sponsored the resolution, and Rosario Sánchez Grau, Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism.

The resolution, adopted by 86 Member States at the UN General Assembly in February, marks a significant milestone. UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the collaborative effort behind the resolution, stating, “The adoption of the Resolution to proclaim 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism was a joint achievement. So it is only right we come together today to celebrate it. The year will allow us to make clear tourism’s unique ability to drive development and opportunity, while also stressing the need to ensure that the sector’s growth is sustainable in every way and resilient enough to weather future shocks and challenges.”

The UN General Assembly Resolution calls on UN Tourism to lead the organization and implementation of the International Year in partnership with governments, UN organizations, international and regional bodies, and other stakeholders.
