The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk to host the Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off, February 25-26, 2017

SANTA CRUZ, CA, 2017-Feb-25 — /Travel PR News/ — The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will host the Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off this weekend, rain or shine. For the first time in 36 years, the popular cook-off is expanding to two days of competition with forty-four amateur teams on Saturday February 25 and thirty-four professional chefs on Sunday, February 26.  The fun event benefits City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation programs.

Visitors will find both Boston (white) and Manhattan (red) chowders to sample, cooked up at colorful booths along the Boardwalk.  More than just a cooking competition, the Clam Chowder Cook-Off is an entertaining event with costumed participants boasting punny team names  like Clamilton – An American Chowder, Madd Matt’s – Beyond the Chowder Bowl,  and Killer Klams from Chowder Space.

Restaurants participating on Sunday include Rosie McCann’s, East Side Eatery,  Midgleys Public House, Devil’s Slide Taproom, Solaire Restaurant & Bar, Surf City Sandwich, Ideal Bar & Grill, and Jack O’Neill at Dream Inn and Scott’s Seafood of San Jose.  Other professionals include UCSC Dining, Dominical Oaks, Sesnon House at Cabrillo College, and Local Harvest Catering.

Former Top Chef competitor, Michael Midgley is returning for his third Clam Chowder Cook-Off.  Midgley, who runs Midgley’s Public House in Stockton is no stranger to tough competition, in addition to Top Chef, Midgley has appeared on TV’s Knife Fight and Cutthroat Kitchen.

Admission to the rain or shine event is free; tasting kits are $10 for 6 samples. Preparation starts at 10 am, cooking at 11 am, public tasting is from 1 pm – 3 pm. Winners will be announced at 4 pm on the Colonnade near Neptune’s Kingdom.

All proceeds from the sale of tasting kits benefit the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department. Last year the event brought in $94,000.00 for Parks and Recreation Department programs. The popular event has raised $1.3 million since it started in 1981.
