Summer Screen returns to Somerset House with a truly eclectic mix of movies

One of London’s most popular open air film events returns with another far-reaching programme, reports LondonTown.com

2013-07-31 — /travelprnews.com/ — Possibly the most famous of all the open air film events to take place in London, Summer Screen in association with Film4 returns to Somerset House this summer. Running from the 8th to 21st August, the 14-day festival provides a truly eclectic mix of movies including comedy, romance, musicals, thrillers and cult classics. The event takes place in the beautiful 18th century courtyard, where films are shown on a giant screen with full surround sound, and a DJ plays an early evening session each night. Guests are also welcome to bring a picnic, making this the perfect addition to the London events calendar this summer.

This year the programme kicks off with the world premiere of the new Richard Curtis rom-com About Time, starring Domhall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams and Bill Nighy. The film sees Tim (Domhall Gleeson) be given the opportunity to relive every moment of his life until he gets it right, thus showing how the course of true love can be particularly testing. The programme also includes two UK premieres – charming comedy The Way Way Back, starring Steve Carell and Toni Collette, and Prince Avalanche, with Paul Rudd and Emile Kirsch, which brings the season to a close.

In between these audiences will be able to feast their eyes on an array of films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Crazy Stupid Love, Kes, Guys and Dolls and The Untouchables. Special multi-film nights include a triple bill of high-school comedy and horrors Mean Girls, Carrie and The Loved Ones, a monster double bill of Predator and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and a night celebrating the American outlaw spirit of Badlands and Raising Arizona. The event also welcomes a number of directors, actors and industry insiders to London to provide a special insight into the films and further illuminate the programme.
