(PRESS RELEASE) COUNTY CLARE, Ireland, 2025-May-8 — /Travel PR News/ — Shannon Airport has expanded its security team by welcoming fourteen new officers in preparation for a busy summer travel season. The new members of the Airport Search Unit (ASU) have completed comprehensive training, including the operation of the airport’s state-of-the-art three-dimensional X-ray screening system, which is equipped with explosive detection software. This technology allows passengers to keep their 100ml liquids and electronics in their cabin bags while passing through security, enhancing the travel experience.

The training program, which was led by in-house instructors, also included Cabin Baggage Search, Manual Handling, and Sunflower Hidden Disability Training, among other key areas. The certification process was completed through exams administered by the Irish Aviation Authority.

The new ASU officers come from diverse backgrounds, including hospitality, retail, healthcare, and several have advanced from other departments at the airport, such as the Mobility Assistance Unit. They hail from local areas such as Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary, as well as Finland. The recruits were formally welcomed to the Shannon Airport team this week at a special event where they received their official certificates.

Pat O’Brien, Chief Officer of Shannon Airport Police Fire Service and Security, expressed his pride in the new team members, saying, “The Airport Search Unit officers play a vital role in both airport security and in delivering a top-notch customer experience. I congratulate them on their successful completion of the training program and thank the instructors for their dedication.”

Katie Duggan-Hastings, Screening Supervisor and lead instructor, added, “The training covered a lot of ground, especially as most of the recruits did not come from a security background. It’s wonderful to see them now certified and ready to contribute to the security and smooth operation of Shannon Airport.”

With 36 routes to 11 countries this summer and more than 53,000 passengers passing through during the May bank holiday period, the newly trained team is eager to ensure that travelers have a seamless security experience at Ireland’s favorite airport.
