San Diego Zoo Panda Cub Receives First Vaccination During Sixth Exam

Eyes and Ears Continue to Open, No Sign of Teeth

2012-10-1 — /travelprnews.com/ — Veterinarians today at the San Diego Zoo administered the first vaccination to the giant panda cub during his sixth exam. The male cub didn’t make a sound or flinch for the shot.

The exam showed that the cub’s ears and eyes are continuing to open on the same schedule as previous cubs born at the San Diego Zoo. Vets listened to the cub’s heart and lungs and checked to make sure that the muscles and joints were moving properly – and all appeared just fine.

The 58-day-old panda cub weighed 5.8 pounds (2.64 kilograms) on Tuesday morning. His chest girth is 12.9 inches (33 centimeters) and his belly measures 14.9 inches (38 centimeters) around.

The San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy received more than 7,500 name submissions for the male panda, born on July 29, 2012. The names are being reviewed and the public will be invited to participate in a popular online vote for the cub’s name in October.

The giant panda cub and his mother, Bai Yun, can be viewed 24 hours a day on PandaCam, online at www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam.
