With the recent announcement of “Freedom” day in the UK, it seems like a great excuse to visit some of UK’s most beautiful places in the Southwest of England. From the beaches of Cornwall, the Isle of Wight and Dorset, to the architecture and Roman remains in Bath, you’ll be spoilt for choice in this wonderful area and, with PaulCamper prices starting from just £70, it need not cost a fortune…
Once you’ve booked your vehicle of choice, it’s now time to book your camping site. With so many to choose from, it’s very difficult to narrow it down, so here’s just a few to whet your appetite:
Back of Beyond Touring & Camping Park, Dorset An adults-only site with spacious pitches and power showers! It is set in 30 acres of woodland, with a fully stocked fishing lake, is a haven for wildlife and located a short drive to beaches and the New Forest.
Meadow Lakes, Cornwall This award-winning site, near St Austell in Cornwall, is perfect for families. With a heated outdoor pool, a café, indoor and outdoor play areas and a pets’ corner with miniature Shetland ponies, donkeys, goats, ducks and chickens, there’s plenty to keep children happy.
Bath Chew Valley Caravan, Somerset Located just 10 miles from Bath, Bristol and Wells and all the attractions these three historical and cultural cities have to offer. A peaceful, adults-only, with 45 private and secluded hardstanding pitches and its own pub. When camping, there’s nothing better than cooking up a storm on your hob or BBQ with some local produce. This area has a whole stack of farm shops, so here’s a couple to tempt you:
Candy’s Farm Shop & Butchery; Wimborne, Dorset This family run shop specialises in beef, pork and lamb, most of which have either been home-reared on the farm or sourced from other local sustainable farms. They also make their own burgers and sausages and, if you’re having a lazy day, delivery is also available.
Lobbs Farm Shop; St Austell, Cornwall This shop contains a wide range of local produce including – meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, bread and cakes, and local beers and wines. They also offer a delivery service.
If fish is your thing, then you should really check out the “world-famous” Brixham Fish Market.
With a strong fishing tradition dating back to the 14th century, Brixham is credited with being one of the birthplaces of trawling and, with over 40 different species of fish on offer, you’re bound to find something for any tastebud.
If you fancy a night off from cooking there are, naturally, some wonderful pubs to consider. Here are a few of our favourites:
The Cornish Arms; Tavistock, Devon Set at the foothills of Dartmoor in the Devonshire countryside, this award-winning pub serves great local British food, inside or out, and has a kid’s menu.
The Bathampton Mill; Bath Just a couple of miles outside Bath it’s right on the river and outside seating, so it’s a great place to sit and watch the boats go by. It has varied menu, from sharing plates to fish and chips and serves food all day.
Rashleigh Arms, Charlestown, St Austell, Cornwall Set in the historic fishing village of Charlestown, the set of many famous films and television appearances including Cornish favourite, Poldark. This pub serves fresh, locally sourced cuisine and overlooks the harbour.
