Mandarin Oriental Unveils Refined Visual Identity: Blending Timeless Heritage with Modern Elegance
(IN SHORT) Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced a refreshed visual identity that blends its historic luxury heritage with modern design elements. The new identity features a modernized fan logo, a simplified wordmark, custom MO Exceptional typography, and an enriched color palette that now includes Celadon Green—a nod to the cultural significance of green-glazed ceramics in Asia. This evolution is not just a visual update but a reaffirmation of the brand’s commitment to creating personalized, immersive guest experiences. While maintaining a global identity centered around the iconic fan—the symbol of its Asian heritage and exceptional service—the brand also allows for local personalization, with each property tailoring elements of its visual expression to reflect its unique cultural context. This initiative marks the next chapter in Mandarin Oriental’s long history, one that honors its legacy of excellence while embracing innovation and deeper guest connections.
(PRESS RELEASE) HONG KONG, 2025-Apr-11 — /Travel PR News/ — Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group today unveils a refined visual identity that harmonizes its storied heritage with a forward-looking vision. The refreshed identity features a modernised fan logo, a streamlined wordmark, bespoke typography, and an enriched color palette, all designed to elevate the guest experience while preserving the brand’s iconic status.
Since 1876, Mandarin Oriental has set the benchmark in luxury hospitality, renowned for its legendary service, cultural authenticity, and innovative spirit. This evolution goes beyond aesthetics, reaffirming the brand’s core philosophy of forging meaningful connections through craftsmanship, storytelling, and immersive experiences.
At the heart of the brand remains the fan—an enduring symbol of exceptional service and dual-Asian heritage. Introduced in 1985, the fan was originally chosen for its graceful and artistic qualities, perfectly encapsulating the attentiveness that defines the Orient. Now revitalized, the fan continues to command global recognition as a mark of excellence.
Building on this legacy, Mandarin Oriental introduces its proprietary typeface, MO Exceptional, meticulously crafted to echo the fan’s geometric elegance. Complementing the classic palette of black, white, and gold is the new Celadon Green—a color inspired by the revered green-glazed ceramics of China and Thailand. This addition reinforces the Group’s deep cultural connections while evoking a sense of serenity and refined luxury.
An example of Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong’s celebrated local fan and the new visualisation.
While the iconic fan remains central, the new visual identity embraces flexibility and local relevance. Approximately one-third of branded items will continue to be fully personalised by each property. This ensures that every Mandarin Oriental destination can express its unique character—whether through locally commissioned fan designs, bespoke artistic interpretations, or carefully curated antique pieces that reflect regional heritage.
This refreshed identity permeates every touchpoint of the guest journey. From thoughtfully designed signage to immersive brand experiences, the evolution is intended to deepen guests’ emotional connection with the brand, making each encounter a seamless blend of heritage and innovation.
Alex Schellenberger, Senior Vice President, Brand, Mandarin Oriental, remarked, “Luxury is so much more than just aesthetics—it’s about emotion, storytelling, and the seamless integration of heritage with innovation. Our refined visual identity is a natural evolution that aligns with our guests’ expectations: personalised, distinctive, and deeply rooted in cultural authenticity. This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Mandarin Oriental.”
This transformation pays tribute to the visionary leaders who have shaped Mandarin Oriental’s legacy—among them, Sir Hugh Barton, former Chairman of Jardine Matheson, whose leadership during the formation of The Mandarin in Hong Kong helped establish the foundation of luxury hospitality as we know it today. The merging of The Oriental in Bangkok with The Mandarin in Hong Kong in 1974, which led to the creation of the Mandarin Oriental name and the adoption of the fan as a symbol of unity, continues to inspire the Group’s evolution.
