2013-01-15 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners today approved the purchase of 15 alternative-fuel vehicles as part of Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA’s) ongoing Alternative Fuel Vehicle Program

The vehicles, fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG), will be purchased from DCH Gardena Honda at a cost of $404,076.94 to be used by various divisions at Los Angeles International Airport.

In 1999, LAWA adopted an alternative-fuel vehicle program that established guidelines governing its identification and replacement of fossil-fuel vehicles and equipment using alternative fuel, where possible and feasible.

Airport staff evaluates the replacement of vehicles, sedans and light trucks, medium and heavy-duty trucks and other specialized equipment on a case-by-case basis.  Today’s Board action enables staff to replace sedans at the end of their useful life.  Replacement of those sedans will increase availability, reliability, operation safety and delivery of services, while decreasing maintenance and ownership costs.

There are presently more than 600 alternative-fuel vehicles, or more than 70 percent, in LAWA’s fleet inventory.
