London Luton Airport Sets European Benchmark with Surge in Next-Generation Aircraft Usage

(IN SHORT) London Luton Airport (LLA) leads major European airports in using next-generation aircraft, with 47.8% of passenger flights from March 2024 to February 2025 operated by Airbus neo or Boeing Max models, rising to 56% in January 2025, per RDC Aviation data. These planes reduce emissions by 20% and noise levels. LLA collaborates with Wizz Air (fully A321neo at Luton), easyJet, Jet2 (adding A321neos in April), and Ryanair (more Boeing 737 8200s) to drive this shift. CEO Alberto Martin highlighted sustainability strides and a Net Zero 2040 goal, supported by a proposed ‘Green Controlled Growth’ framework. Wizz Air’s Yvonne Moynihan emphasized their eco-investments, noting regulatory delays as a challenge.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUTON, 2025-Mar-31 — /Travel PR News/ — London Luton Airport (LLA) is spearheading the shift toward quieter, more eco-friendly aviation, boasting the highest share of passenger flights operated by advanced “next-generation” aircraft among Europe’s major airports.

According to insights from RDC Aviation, between March 2024 and February 2025, nearly half (47.8%) of LLA’s departing commercial passenger flights utilized Airbus neo or Boeing Max models, which cut emissions by up to 20% and lessen noise impact. The trend is accelerating, with over 50% of flights since November 2024—and 56% in January 2025—relying on these modern variants.

LLA has partnered closely with its key carriers to boost adoption of these efficient planes. Wizz Air’s Luton-based fleet now consists entirely of Airbus A321neos, easyJet has ramped up its neo deployments, and Jet2 will introduce two A321neos upon launching operations in April. Ryanair, meanwhile, has increased its use of Boeing 737 8200 (MAX) aircraft.

Alberto Martin, Chief Executive Officer at LLA, stated, “The RDC data underscores London Luton Airport’s leadership in promoting sustainable airline operations. Beyond aiding our carriers in modernizing fleets and slashing emissions, we’re advancing toward our Net Zero airport emissions goal by 2040. Our expansion plans, pending Government approval, introduce a groundbreaking ‘Green Controlled Growth’ framework with enforceable limits on noise, carbon, air quality, and traffic impacts—ensuring growth aligns with environmental and community priorities.”

Yvonne Moynihan, Wizz Air’s Corporate and ESG Officer, added, “We’ve poured significant investment into next-generation tech, with our UK fleet now 100% Airbus A321neo—the youngest in Europe. Alongside funding Sustainable Aviation Fuel production, we’re pushing decarbonization. Yet, slow infrastructure progress and outdated regulations hinder the sector. Partnering with LLA, a cornerstone for Wizz Air in the UK, we’re committed to leading the charge for greener aviation.”
