“2016 finished as our first 11-million passenger year since 2007 and the sixth busiest year in KCI Airport’s 44-year history,” said Kansas City Director of Aviation Pat Klein. “Our 32nd consecutive month of traffic growth was highlighted by the airline industry’s continual shift toward larger aircraft combined with a strong holiday travel period. Competitive air fares and multiple nonstop flight options continue to make Kansas City International Airport the airport of choice for travelers in the four-state region.”
Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were up 14.8 percent in December with a total of 20.2 million pounds handled, and 10.5 percent for the year with 210.5 million pounds handled. Air freight handled at KCI during December amounted to 19.5 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year increase of 14.8 percent, and year-end 2016 freight was up 11.4 percent with 203.9 million pounds handled. Air mail for December was up 13.1 percent from December 2015 with 706,974 pounds handled, and down 12.2 percent with 6.6 million pounds handled in 2016.
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for December 2016 was 165. Service was offered to 45 nonstop markets. There was an average of 38,269 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 7 daily departures for December.
