IATA FuelIS to Help GOL and TAP Air Portugal Cut Fuel Costs and Support Decarbonization

(IN SHORT) GOL and TAP Air Portugal have become the first airlines to implement IATA FuelIS, an advanced solution that helps airlines optimize fuel consumption and improve fuel efficiency. FuelIS uses real operational data from over 220 airlines globally, providing airlines with the ability to benchmark their fuel efficiency against industry standards. This data will assist in reducing fuel consumption, cutting costs, and supporting the transition toward decarbonization. By adopting FuelIS, both airlines are taking significant steps toward more efficient and sustainable operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) NEW DELHI, 2025-Jun-4 — /Travel PR News/ — The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that GOL and TAP Air Portugal are the first airlines to implement IATA FuelIS, an advanced analytics solution designed to help airlines optimize their fuel consumption. This adoption is a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce fuel use and support sustainability.

As part of IATA’s roadmap toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, technology and operational efficiency improvements—such as fuel consumption optimization—are expected to contribute to approximately 10% of emissions reductions in the coming decades.

“Fuel management is crucial for airlines, as it typically represents 25-30% of their operating costs, depending on jet fuel prices. Moreover, as the industry works toward decarbonization, managing carbon costs, which are directly tied to fuel consumption, will be increasingly important. FuelIS gives airlines the ability to track and compare their performance against industry peers, identifying efficiencies that not only reduce costs but also improve environmental outcomes,” said Nick Careen, Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety, and Security at IATA.

Data Accuracy and Operational Insights

IATA FuelIS allows airlines to benchmark the fuel efficiency of their aircraft and engines against industry averages, providing actionable insights into specific regions, markets, fleet types, and operational data. This data is sourced from IATA’s Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform, which aggregates fuel data from over 220 airlines globally, covering more than 8 million flights per year.

The solution integrates with IATA’s Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis (FEGA), supporting the development and tracking of fuel strategies. Since 2005, IATA has collaborated with airlines worldwide to help the industry identify potential annual fuel reductions of 4.76 million tonnes, resulting in $3.8 billion in savings each year.

Supporting Decarbonization and Cost Efficiency

TAP Air Portugal and GOL have both expressed the value of FuelIS in their decarbonization strategies.

“Fuel is a major cost driver for TAP Air Portugal, and managing fuel consumption is crucial for both cost management and decarbonization efforts,” said TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues. “The insights provided by FuelIS help us track the impact of our fleet modernization and the transition to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), supporting a responsive fuel strategy that adapts to market and operational changes.”

“Fuel is one of the largest cost factors for any airline, and managing fuel use effectively can provide a significant competitive advantage,” said Albert Pérez, COO of GOL. “FuelIS equips us with the data we need to make more informed fuel decisions, benchmark our progress against the industry, and continue improving our operations while reducing costs.”

IATA’s FuelIS marks a crucial step toward more efficient, sustainable aviation operations as airlines work to meet their emissions reduction targets and improve their fuel efficiency.
