Hotels Turn Earth Hour into Interactive Experiences as Marco Polo Xiamen Combines Fitness, Wellness and Environmental Action

(NEWS) XIAMEN, China, 2026-Apr-1 — /Travel PR News/ — Hotels across Asia are increasingly using global environmental campaigns as a platform to engage guests beyond traditional hospitality experiences, with sustainability initiatives moving into more visible, participatory formats.

At Marco Polo Xiamen, this shift was evident during this year’s Earth Hour, where the property combined community-focused activities with guest engagement to highlight environmental awareness.

The hotel marked the occasion on 28 March with two main events designed to encourage both physical participation and reflection. In the morning, staff, guests and local running groups gathered at Yundang Lake for a “plogging” session — a hybrid activity combining jogging with litter collection. Participants covered the lakeside area while collecting waste, gathering around four kilograms of debris over the course of the event.

According to details shared by the hotel, the activity was intended to demonstrate how small-scale, everyday actions can contribute to broader environmental efforts, while also promoting healthier lifestyles. The initiative reflects a wider trend within the hospitality sector, where sustainability programmes increasingly incorporate guest involvement rather than remaining operational or behind-the-scenes.

Later in the evening, the hotel joined the global Earth Hour initiative by switching off non-essential lighting across its public spaces. Guests were also encouraged to participate by reducing energy use in their rooms during the designated hour.

The property’s lobby lounge was temporarily reconfigured into a meditation setting, where a guided singing bowl session was held in low light. Led by wellness practitioners, the experience combined sound therapy with quiet reflection, offering a contrast to the typically fast-paced environment of a city hotel.

While Earth Hour has traditionally centred on symbolic energy reduction, hotels such as Marco Polo Xiamen are increasingly using the occasion to introduce broader sustainability messaging. In this case, the programme combined environmental awareness with wellness and community engagement, aligning with a longer-term strategy to integrate sustainability into guest-facing experiences.

The hotel is part of Marco Polo Hotels, which operates properties across Asia and is a member of the Global Hotel Alliance. Across the sector, similar initiatives are becoming more common as brands seek to align with global environmental goals while responding to growing traveller interest in responsible tourism.

As sustainability continues to shape the hospitality landscape, events like Earth Hour are increasingly being used not just as symbolic gestures, but as opportunities to test how environmental awareness can be embedded into the everyday guest experience.
