Florence Prepares for Landmark Rothko Retrospective as Hotel Savoy Unveils Exclusive Art Experiences

FLORENCE, 2026-Jan-13 — /Travel PR News/ — Florence is preparing to host one of its most ambitious contemporary art events in recent years with a major retrospective dedicated to Mark Rothko, running from 14 March to 23 August 2026. Timed to coincide with the exhibition, Hotel Savoy Florence has unveiled a programme of curated cultural experiences designed to connect guests directly with the city-wide celebration, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi.

The exhibition, titled Rothko in Florence, will be anchored at Palazzo Strozzi and extend across key cultural landmarks, including the Museo di San Marco and the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana. Curated by Christopher Rothko and Elena Geuna, the retrospective explores the influence of Italian Renaissance art on Rothko’s work, placing his meditative canvases in dialogue with figures such as Beato Angelico and Michelangelo. More than 70 works will be shown, including large-scale paintings rarely exhibited in Italy, supported by loans from the artist’s family and major institutions including MoMA, Tate and the National Gallery of Art, based on details outlined in the exhibition announcement.

In parallel with the exhibition’s opening, Hotel Savoy will offer a limited-edition Spring with Rothko experience for suite guests between 12 and 14 March 2026. The programme includes private previews of the exhibition, invitations to the official gala dinner attended by curators, collectors and members of Rothko’s family, as well as access to exclusive post-opening celebrations. Throughout the exhibition period, guests will also be able to book private after-hours tours of the galleries, led by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi’s Director General Arturo Galansino or members of the curatorial team.

The initiative reflects a broader trend among luxury hotels in historic cities to act as cultural intermediaries rather than simply accommodation providers. As highlighted in official communications from the hotel, the partnership aims to offer guests privileged access to major artistic moments while embedding their stay within Florence’s living cultural fabric. The programme aligns with Rocco Forte HotelsSuites & Beyond concept, which focuses on personalised service, insider access and destination-led experiences for suite guests.

Located in Piazza della Repubblica, Hotel Savoy has long positioned itself as a cultural meeting point in Florence, combining contemporary design with deep ties to the city’s artistic institutions. With Rothko in Florence expected to attract international visitors and art audiences over its five-month run, the hotel’s curated experiences underscore Florence’s ongoing ability to reinterpret its Renaissance heritage through a modern lens, bringing global contemporary art into conversation with the city’s historic soul.
