Emirates, IATA, and Airbus Collaborate to Enhance A350 Pilot Training

(IN SHORT) In a groundbreaking collaboration, Emirates, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and Airbus have announced an advanced Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) programme for the A350 type rating, in preparation for Emirates’ receipt of 65 A350s starting mid-2024. The program, set to commence at Emirates’ Training College in Dubai from July 2024, will initially train 256 pilots. Combining IATA’s principles, Emirates’ operational expertise, and Airbus’ extensive CBTA training experience on the A350, spanning over a decade, the program emphasizes pilot competency and behavior assessment, enabling instructors to provide immediate performance feedback. The comprehensive course, conducted over two phases with 20 days of simulator training and evaluation in 15 separate sessions, ensures pilots are equipped with world-class capabilities to support Emirates’ global operations. Capt. Bader Al Marzooqi, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Flight Training, highlighted the program’s significance in integrating the A350 into Emirates’ fleet, with 1,000 pilots set to complete the type rating course. Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety and Security, emphasized the collective effort’s objective to optimize CBTA benefits for A350 pilot qualification efficiently. Airbus’ Capt Stéphan Labrucherie emphasized the A350’s advanced nature and the partnership’s commitment to delivering comprehensive and effective training. This initiative underscores Emirates’ commitment to operational excellence and readiness for the A350’s service debut, with various departments, including Service Delivery and Engineering, actively preparing for its integration.

(PRESS RELEASE) Dubai, UAE, 2024-Jun-5 — /Travel PR News/ — In anticipation of the delivery of 65 A350 aircrafts starting from mid-2024, Emirates has partnered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airbus to pioneer an enhanced Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) program for the A350 type rating.

Commencing in July 2024, Emirates’ Training college in Dubai will host the inaugural cohort of 256 pilots for this innovative training course. Designed to fuse IATA’s principles and documentation with Emirates’ operational expertise and resources, alongside Airbus’ extensive CBTA training experience on the A350 spanning over a decade, this program represents a pinnacle in pilot training methodologies.

Grounded in assessing pilot competency and behavior, the A350 CBTA program employs a proven training philosophy that enables instructors to evaluate pilot training in real-time, facilitating immediate enhancements in performance. The program will unfold in two phases, encompassing 20 days of simulator training and evaluation across 15 separate sessions.

Capt. Bader Al Marzooqi, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Flight Training, expressed enthusiasm about the program, stating, “With this initiative, Emirates’ pilots will undergo in-house competency-based training facilitated by highly qualified instructors, equipping them with world-class capabilities to bolster the airline’s global operations. The tailored CBTA program for the A350 aligns seamlessly with our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of service and comfort while supporting our operational growth and expansion.”

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety and Security, emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, saying, “Bringing together the expertise of Emirates, Airbus, and IATA to devise and execute A350 type rating training represents a unique opportunity. Our collective goal is to harness the benefits of CBTA to qualify pilots on the A350 in the most efficient and effective manner possible. Through this collaboration, all three organizations stand to gain invaluable experience that can enrich their respective training activities.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Capt Stéphan Labrucherie, Airbus Head of Flight Training Worldwide, highlighted the importance of cutting-edge training solutions for state-of-the-art aircraft like the A350, emphasizing the joint effort to ensure Emirates’ pilots receive comprehensive and effective training for the smooth integration of the A350 into service globally.

Beyond pilot training, Emirates is actively preparing various facets of its operations, including Service Delivery and Engineering teams, for the introduction of A350 operations.

CBTA and IATA

The collaboration between Emirates, IATA, and Airbus underscores a longstanding industry aspiration to leverage the benefits and efficiencies of CBTA training. In this endeavor, IATA provides essential support through its CBTA Guide for Flight Crew Training, fully aligned with ICAO CBTA standards and tailored to meet the specific needs of Airlines/Operators and Training Organizations.

Furthermore, IATA’s focus on CBTA training extends to support for the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, offering specialized CBTA training for various airline functions, from ground handlers to passenger agents, load planning, crew, and others. The IATA CBTA Center stands as a vital resource, aiding organizations across the aviation industry in developing capabilities and resources for dangerous goods training programs.
