2012-10-15 — /travelprnews.com/ — Airports Company South Africa is pleased to report that the R1,85 billion sale of the Durban International Airport site in Durban’s South Basin to Transnet has now been concluded, with the property registered in Transnet’s name with effect from 1 October 2012.
This is the conclusion of a lengthy process which started with the trouble-free transfer of operations from the constrained operations at Durban International to the brand new, greenfield King Shaka International Airport on 1 May 2010.
Both sites now create the ideal environment for major employment and new business opportunities. Transnet is proposing the development of a dug-out container port for the South Basin site, which will provide expanded and more efficient import and export facilities to the long-term sustainability of the Durban Harbour facility. This carries with it the job creation during construction and the long-term employment and associated business opportunities when the new port is in operation.
Airports Company South Africa’s relocation to King Shaka International has already confirmed the value of the partnership with Dube TradePort in creating a successful development hub. Co-operative initiatives of this nature provide unrivalled growth potential to support South Africa’s critical need for business development, with its employment-linked benefits.
