BUDAPEST, Hungary, 2019-Mar-29 — /Travel PR News/ — Another important logistics company has decided to move its air cargo operations directly to Budapest Airport: DB Schenker has signed an agreement to rent warehouse and office space in the newly built BUD Cargo City. The brand new dedicated cargo facility will offer 21 600 square meters of warehouse and an additional 11 200 square meters of further warehouse and office space to forwarders.
With warm spring weather stabilizing in Hungary the construction of BUD Cargo City has gained speed. The structure of the new 21 600-square-meter warehouse near Terminal 2 of Budapest Airport has already reached its final form while next to it groundworks are progressing at full speed on the so-called forwarder building. The latter will offer 11 200 square meters of warehouse combined with office space adjacent to the cargo operations warehouse and to the 32 000 square meters of new concrete cargo apron yet to be built this year. The new cargo apron will enable cargo operators to service two Code F or Jumbo-sized aircraft simultaneously. The new cargo facility of Budapest Airport will be handed over to operators and tenants by the end of this year.
According to the agreement just signed, one of the new tenants will be DB Schenker, a leading multinational company providing forwarding, logistics, and supply chain management services on a global scale. In Hungary, DB Schenker operates over 52 000 square meters of warehousing space with a central location in Szigetszentmiklós (just South of Budapest near the M0 motorway) where the company also has its Hungarian headquarters of land-based, air- and maritime freight forwarding operations on over 5000 square meters. DB Schenker has decided to join the BUD Cargo City community and rent 700 square meters of warehouse space and more than 200 square meters of offices from Budapest Airport in the new forwarder building.
“There was not much deliberation on our side. When we at Schenker first heard about the BUD Cargo City project, we instantly knew that we wanted to be there. On the one hand, Budapest Airport is developing very fast, and an operational presence inside the airport perimeter gives us yet another edge in serving our air-freight customers’ increasing speed to market demands.. On the other hand, by moving our air-freight transit warehouse to BUD Cargo City we will be able to free up space in our Szigetszentmiklós warehouse to keep up with the needs of our fast developing land transport groupage operations. A really unique opportunity to serve both our development agendas and to directly contribute to the much deserved growth of Budapest Airport,” said Mr. Sándor Barényi, managing director of Schenker Kft in Hungary.
“I am both happy and proud to welcome DB Schenker as a new member of the Cargo City community at the airport. By the end of the year our logistics partners will have a state-of-the-art cargo operations facility, right inside the fence of the airport, with direct access to operations,” noted René Droese, Director of Property and Cargo at Budapest Airport. He added, “We think that this is the right moment – now every condition is given to turn Budapest Airport into a leading cargo and logistics hub in Central and Eastern Europe to the benefit of not only the economy of Hungary but the whole region. We will do everything to keep this momentum, and we are ready to continue the extension of Cargo City if there is market demand.”
