MALDIVES, 2014-04-25 — /Travel PR News/ — Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, part of the prestigious Coco Collection and renowned for its rustic and sustainable hospitality, is actively involved in eco-friendly initiatives to ensure that the Maldives remains a top tourist hot spot. With their focus set firmly on green luxury, the resort aims to preserve its white sand beaches, turquoise blue sea, and lush tropical landscapes for generations to come.
Preserving the Marine Biodiversity
Coco Palm Dhuni has been recognized by the Manta Trust and Maldives Turtle Identification Project for its support in increasing overall sightings of both species in their natural habitat. In particular, the resort is honoured to have contributed the greatest number of newly identified Manta Rays for the year 2013. These rankings were secured through Coco Collection’s initiatives, aimed at encouraging a “citizen science” culture amongst its guests.
Along with identifying sea turtles, Coco Collection has also started their own Sea Turtle Nest Protection Programme; monitoring them on the resort and in their natural habitat, preventing poaching and releasing baby turtles into the open ocean to increase their survival chances. In addition, they have introduced the Coral Nursery Programme, which is designed to regenerate the broken reef, monitor its growth and preserve the diverse types of marine habitats for future generations.
Commenting on Coco Collection’s marine biodiversity initiatives, Chiara Fumagalli, Resident Marine Biologist, says, “Ideally, I would like a holiday in the Maldives to be considered not only as a visit to one of the most amazing tourist destinations in the world, but also as a chance to experience valuable environmental practices, useful in everyday life.”
Environment and Social Sustainability
Fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, herbs, and orchids are grown in the resort’s on-site garden. Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu also practices sustainable purchasing by sourcing all other supplies nearby in order to support Maldivian-run businesses and the local communities. As part of the ‘Uniquely Coco’ experiences, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu also entertains visits from native islands, providing guests with a chance to learn about the enticing culture and extensive history of the Maldives. What’s more, the resort hosts an on-site drinkable water production and bottling plant, using glass bottles to reduce the use of plastic at the resort.
Education and Engagement
Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu aims to instil environmental awareness within its guests long after they have left the island. A key example is the resort’s Planting Trees Programme, which provides guests with the opportunity to plant a sapling and leave an accompanying commemorative plaque; a memorable experience in helping to preserve the island. In addition, the resort celebrates Earth Day with the local community, inviting students from local schools to explore the resort’s environmental initiatives and learn how to transfer these practices for daily use on the neighbouring islands.
