BUDAPEST, Hungary, 2019-Feb-25 — /Travel PR News/ — Budapest Airport is adding further network ties with Ryanair as the carrier announces that it will begin services from the Hungarian capital to Bordeaux, Palma de Mallorca and Toulouse. As weekly flights to Balearic Isle begin 6 June, the additional capacity supports the Spanish market which saw a robust 29% increase in passenger numbers from Budapest in 2018. Services on both new routes to France will be inaugurated for the W19/20 season, with the twice-weekly services.
“Adding these new services shows that Ryanair continues to see Budapest as an attractive market which is both positive for travel and tourism, and for Hungarian business,” says Balázs Bogáts, Head of Airline Development, Budapest Airport. “The airport is investing €700m into its development programme to ensure that it is future-proofed and future-ready. Working with committed airline partners such as Ryanair demonstrates the importance of such an investment to allow us to uphold and maintain service levels for all carriers and passengers.”
While complementing Wizz Air’s existing seasonal service to Bordeaux, Ryanair will be launching Budapest’s only non-stop link to Toulouse, which sees a potential market of 30,000 passengers per annum travel between the two cities via another European airport. Ryanair’s latest commitment will add more than 16,600 seats to Budapest’s winter offerings, while the addition of these new flights strengthens the importance of the French market to Hungary’s capital city. In 2018, just shy of 700,000 passengers travelled between Budapest and France, with the market accounting for 5% of all travellers to and from the Hungarian gateway, highlighting the significance of this country market to the airport.
With the ultra-low-cost carrier’s expansion of French services from Budapest, it means the airport will offer close to 60 weekly departures to nine French airports next winter – namely Paris’ Beauvais, CDG and Orly airports, plus Marseille, Nantes, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice and Toulouse. All three of Ryanair’s new services will be flown using its 189-seat 737-800s.
This latest development from Ryanair follows what promises to be an exciting summer season for the airline from Budapest, with it having already confirmed new routes to Bari, Cagliari, Cork, Rimini, Seville and Thessaloniki. The airline’s commitment to Budapest means that it will grow the number of seats it operates from the airport this coming summer by 15%, with it poised to offer over 1.9 million seats across a network of 39 destinations, with Palma de Mallorca, Bordeaux and Toulouse set to become its 39th, 40th and 41st destinations from Hungary.
Further increasing Budapest’s route network during S19, home-based carrier Wizz Air, will add to the airport’s Balearic offerings by launching a seasonal service to Castellón. By commencing the gateway’s first link to this picturesque area of Spain from 16 June, Wizz will be offering eight Spanish destinations this summer namely Madrid, Malaga, Alicante, Ibiza, Tenerife, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca.
With a remarkable 18% increase in passenger traffic at Budapest Airport last year – transporting more than 4.6 million of the airport’s visitors – Wizz Air continues to significantly support the Budapest’s growth and expansion.
