2013-04-12 — /travelprnews.com/ — Bridge Rehabilitations on I-29 and I-435 near KCI Begin Sunday, April 14Bridge rehabilitation to prolong the life of several structures in the Northland begins in April, requiring the Missouri Department of Transportation to temporarily close each structure. Some of this work and other improvements are near Kansas City International Airport. Travelers should allow extra time just in case.
The first bridge to close is the main entrance into KCI Airport for motorists traveling from the south. The northbound I-29 flyover ramp to Route D (Cookingham Drive) will close on Sunday evening, April 14 at 5:00 p.m. for no more than 21 days, weather permitting. Traffic will be detoured to the intersection at the ramp from northbound I-29 to Route D (Cookingham Drive) and I-435. Motorists may also stay on I-29, exit at Mexico City and backtrack southbound to the airport exit, Cookingham Drive.
In June both bridges on the ramp from westbound I-435 to Route D (Cookingham Drive) will be closed for no more than 30 days. The detour will direct traffic on westbound I-435 to northbound I-29 to Mexico City Avenue back onto I-29 southbound to westbound Cookingham Drive toward KCI.
In addition to these closures, the ramp from southbound I-29 to eastbound I-435 (over I-29), will be rehabilitated in early May over 15 days. This ramp will not close, but traffic will be restricted.
Already underway is work to reconfigure the Interstate 29 Interchange with Tiffany Springs Parkway south of KCI. The interchange will be converted into a Diverging Diamond Interchange to enhance the safety and capacity of the interchange. An additional lane will also be added to I‐29 both north and southbound, between Route 152 and Tiffany Springs Parkway. The far right southbound lane is currently closed and there will be intermittent northbound lane closures too during the project, which will be completed sometime in 2014.
Additionally, N.W. Prairie View Road will be expanded to four‐lanes south of Tiffany Springs Parkway, and will connect directly with N.W. Congress creating an alternative route to the Recreation Complex, Zona Rosa shopping areas, and the business district along Barry Road.
All work is weather dependent and the schedule could move as construction completes each structure. For more information about other MoDOT projects, visit www.modot.org/kansascity and http://www.modot.org/kansascity/newrelease/District4Release.shtml?action=displaySSI&newsId=184178.
