Boston Logan International Airport expects increased passenger travel in April as schools in New England close for vacation

WITH LOTS OF CHOICES, MASSPORT URGES TRAVELERS TO CONSIDER HOV ALTERNATIVES LIKE LOGAN EXPRESS AND …

BOSTON, 2014-04-16 — /Travel PR News/ — Increased passenger travel is expected at Boston Logan International Airport during April as schools in New England close for vacation resulting in demand for airport parking that is expected to exceed the number of spaces available.

To help reduce vehicle trips to the airport, Massport provides Logan Express bus service from suburban locations in Braintree, Framingham, Woburn and Peabody. Massport also offers free Silver Line service from the airport to the Seaport District and South Station and starting in April, the new Back Bay Logan Express will serve Copley Square, the Hynes Convention Center and Logan Airport.  Forty percent of Logan’s passengers choose a bus, public transit, taxi or shared vans — like Super Shuttle — to reach the airport, ranking Logan first among U.S. airports for high occupancy vehicle use.

During this vacation period, Massport makes the choice even easier by offering a special Logan Express discount that could add up to more than $100 in savings by not parking at the airport.  For a family of four traveling for a seven day April vacation, roundtrip Logan Express service including parking will cost $44, a dramatic savings over Logan’s Central Garage, which would cost $189, or Economy Parking, which would cost $108. Children 17 years old and under ride for free, when accompanied by an adult on Logan Express and adult passengers will pay half off their round-trip bus fare.

“Parking at the airport has become a chronic problem with more than 56,000 vehicles being diverted or valeted from Central Parking this fiscal year,’’ said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “No one wants to miss a flight because they could not find a place to park. Massport will work hard to accommodate passengers who need parking, but passengers may be sent off airport if there is no more room.’’

During February school vacation, Massport diverted nearly 500 vehicles to Suffolk Downs in East Boston and will be prepared to do so again if parking during April vacation exceeds capacity.  To help alleviate the need for diverting and valeting vehicles, Massport will begin construction this year on a $60 million project to add up to a total of 2,050 spaces to the Central and Terminal B garages, located in the center of the airport campus.

For April vacation Massport is offering a special Logan Express parking rate of $22 between April 14 and April 30, 2014 for 4-14 day parking. Travelers must enter a Logan Express parking lot between 12:01 a.m. on Monday, April 14 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 to be eligible for the special parking rate. Logan Express provides bus service every half hour between Logan Airport and Woburn, Braintree and Framingham, and hourly service between Logan and Peabody. Buses will be added to meet the anticipated increase in demand and maintain the posted schedule. For frequent travelers, Massport is also offering a 10 ride book of tickets for $75, a 30% savings over the standard rate.

For travelers choosing public transportation, the MBTA Silver Line provides service between South Station and Logan’s terminals every 10 minutes. Outbound service from Logan Airport to the South Boston Seaport District and South Station is free. The MBTA Blue Line provides subway service between Boston and Airport Station. Massport provides free shuttle service to and from all terminals Water transportation is also available by water taxi companies providing on-call service to points throughout Downtown Boston from the Logan dock.

Travelers are advised to check with their airline for up-to-date flight information and to allow themselves additional time to get to the airport. For traveler convenience, Massport encourages travelers to visit its mobile optimized website, FlyLogan.com to check flight status, parking conditions and public transportation options from their smartphone or tablet device.
