(NEWS) MADRID, 2026-Mar-17 — /Travel PR News/ — Amadeus is positioning biometric identity as a central pillar of next-generation airport operations, following the rollout of a new digital passenger flow model at Manchester Airport.
Through its collaboration with the UK gateway, Amadeus has enabled a system that allows domestic and international passengers to move through shared terminal spaces—removing one of the long-standing structural constraints in airport design. Based on details shared in official updates, the model replaces traditional physical segregation with a digitally orchestrated journey powered by biometric identity reconciliation.
Moving beyond traditional airport layouts
For decades, airports have separated domestic and international travelers into distinct zones, often leading to duplicated infrastructure and limited flexibility. Amadeus’ approach, now live in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2, shifts that paradigm by embedding identity verification directly into the passenger journey.
Using biometric technology, the system confirms a traveler’s eligibility to move through different parts of the terminal without repeated document checks. Passengers traveling within the UK’s Common Travel Area can proceed seamlessly, while international travelers are automatically routed toward immigration processes managed by UK Border Force, including eGates or officer-assisted controls.
Biometric identity as an operational backbone
The implementation marks a broader shift in how airports are using digital identity—not just as a security layer, but as a tool for managing space and operations more efficiently. Since going live, the system has processed tens of thousands of passengers each month, with automated biometric reconciliation rates reported at around 99 percent across both arrivals and departures.
Airlines operating from Terminal 2, including British Airways, easyJet, Aer Lingus, Loganair, and Aurigny, are now part of a system that supports both domestic and international journeys within a unified infrastructure.
A model for future airport operations
The project forms part of Manchester Airport’s wider £1.3 billion transformation programme, but also serves as a reference point for how airports globally may evolve. By enabling mixed passenger flows within the same physical environment, the model demonstrates how digital identity can unlock additional capacity without the need for significant new infrastructure.
From Amadeus’ perspective, the development highlights the growing role of technology in balancing operational efficiency with regulatory compliance. As passenger volumes continue to rise worldwide, solutions that integrate identity management, infrastructure and border requirements are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the airport experience.
