Winnipeg, Canada, 2016-Apr-25 — /Travel PR News/ — Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. (WAA) is pleased to announce that Winnipeg Richardson International Airport has achieved Level One Mapping certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program.
“Winnipeg Airports Authority is committed to monitoring greenhouse gas emissions and developing innovative reduction strategies to continue on our journey towards becoming a carbon neutral facility,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “Our work on the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program continues as we set our sights on achieving Level Two Reduction.”
Introduced by Airports Council International, Airport Carbon Accreditation is an institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification program for airports. It independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions through four levels of certification: ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’, ‘Optimization’ and ‘Neutrality’.
In order to achieve Level One Mapping certification, WAA completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for year 2014 operations. The scope of the inventory included all emission sources where WAA has direct ownership and control, including emissions from fuel, electricity and natural gas consumed in its generators, boilers, chillers, fleet vehicles and buildings.
WAA is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has undertaken several emissions reduction initiatives, including the installation of a charging station to support a fully electric public transit bus and the construction of a LEED Silver certified terminal building which includes features such as radiant heating and cooling systems, heat recovery systems and electric-powered passenger boarding bridges.
