2013-06-21 — /travelprnews.com/ — Passengers will now have an easier time finding their way at Copenhagen Airport. New signage has been adapted to passengers’ needs, and digital and fixed signs have been coordinated. Danish design and branding agency Kontrapunkt has designed the new signage installed in connection with the major refurbishment and expansion of Terminal 2.
Queues, bottlenecks, ambiguous signs and too many people in too little space: this is what many travellers have experienced in the check-in areas of Copenhagen Airport on the busiest days due to steadily rising passenger numbers. This summer alone, the airport expects to set a record by serving more than 6.6 million travellers.
After completion of the project to refurbish and expand the eastern end of Terminal 2, an additional 1,400 sqm of space has been added to the terminal, solving some of the challenges of the limited space. Copenhagen Airport has introduced a new type of signage in connection with the project: signs that will make wayfinding easier.
“We are constantly working to make it easier for passengers to find their way at the airport, and because we keep growing and having to expand our facilities, we needed to rethink our signage to make wayfinding simpler and more intuitive,” said Copenhagen Airport’s passenger manager Marie-Louise Lotz.
A calm start to your journey
“It is all about giving passengers the greatest possible control over their situation, from the moment they arrive at the airport until they reach the security screening area. We want them to have a calm start to their journey, feel well informed and experience a new airport with more space and facilities,” said Lars Larson, partner and senior project manager at Kontrapunkt, the design and branding agency that won the contract for designing a simpler and more efficient information and wayfinding system that will help passengers get through the airport faster.
As a result of the refurbishment project passenger flows are spread out over larger areas, crossing flows have been minimised, and travellers have easier access to the check-in kiosks. In addition, the new solution also includes and improved screen layout for the digital signs. In other words, the airport has reduced the risk of queues and bottlenecks forming.
Signage supports self service
“Self-service check-in is becoming increasingly common: more than 50% of passengers make use of this facility today. We are really happy about this trend, since we can see that self-service passengers are our most satisfied passengers. The trend also means that travellers have face-to-face contact with fewer airport staff members than before, so it’s even more important that our signs are simple and easy to understand,” explained Marie-Louise Lotz.
The solution developed by Kontrapunkt builds on to the iconic and award-winning signage at Copenhagen Airport designed by Per Mollerup, which has now been adapted to meet new and changed demands. The design agency focused on creating a strong visual and physical connection between the new digital signs and the fixed signs. Using simple logic, the design principles from the fixed signs have been transferred to the digital signs, and, as a result, wayfinding signs at the airport look alike and are thus easy to identify as such.
“Readability, animations and colours are optimised in both the fixed and digital signs, and it is now simpler and easier to get the information you want from the signs. Moreover, the location, positioning and content of all signs have been streamlined and the signs generally made easier to understand. We focused on ensuring that passengers get the information they need in the correct sequence and at the relevant locations on their way through the airport,” said Linda Korndal, architect and designer at Kontrapunkt.
