• October 2012: Trend with load factor continues to be positive, capacity-related decline in passenger volume
2012-11-19 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Austrian Airlines Group increased the number of passengers carried in the first ten months of 2012 by 1.7 percent from the prior-year level to a total of 9.8 million passengers. The passenger load factor was up by 3.6 percentage points, rising to 77.8 percent in the first ten months of the year. Capacity as measured by available seat kilometers (ASK) was reduced by 3.4 percent, whereas the comparable figure for revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) improved by 1.2 percent.
Considering the month of October 2012 in itself, Austrian Airlines carried about one million passengers. Whereas the capacity in available seat kilometers (ASK) was reduced by 10.5 percent, the number of passengers carried only fell by 1.7 percent compared to October 2011. The capacity decline can be attributed to the sale of four medium-haul aircraft (Boeing 737) in contrast to the putting into operation of the first new Airbus 320 in the airline’s fleet. The passenger load factor improved to 78.9 percent in October 2012, an improvement of 3.8 percentage points from October 2011.
“In October we had three fewer aircraft than in the previous year. This means we significantly reduced capacity, but nevertheless only carried a slightly lower number of passengers. This demonstrates our success in effectively marketing our product in all traffic areas in October as well”, says Karsten Benz, Chief Commercial Officer von Austrian Airlines.
Europe
In October 2012, a total of 850,500 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines in Europe. This comprises an increase of 0.2 percent from the previous year. The passenger load factor rose by 4.8 percentage points to 78.2 percent.
In the period January to October 2012, Austrian Airlines carried a total of about 7.8 million passengers in Europe, corresponding to an increase of 2.7 percent. The passenger load factor during this period rose by 3.2 percentage points to 75.3 percent.
Intercontinental
In October 2012 the number of passengers carried on intercontinental flights decreased by 7.5 percent to 141,000. This can be attributed to the cancellation of flights to the USA caused by Hurricane Sandy. The passenger load factor was 80.1 percent, or 3.0 percentage points above the prior-year level.
In the period January to October 2012, Austrian Airlines carried a total of 1.4 million passengers on its intercontinental flights, a slight drop of only 0.2 percent from the previous year in spite of the negative effects relating to the crisis in the Middle East. The passenger load factor climbed 4.2 percentage points to 79.9 percent.
Charter
In October 2012 passenger volume amounted to 37,400, down 17.3 percent from the previous year, which is related to the capacity reduction. The passenger load factor rose by 2.2 percentage points to 73.2 percent.
In the period January to October 2012, a total of 580,700 passengers flew with the Charter segment of Austrian Airlines, a drop of 6.5 percent from the prior-year level. The passenger load factor was up 2.3 percentage points to 79.1 percent.
