Giant Dipper Contest Opens May 17, 2019

SANTA CRUZ, CA, 2019-May-22 — /Travel PR News/ — The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk announced a new contest to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the seaside amusement park’s classic Giant Dipper roller coaster. The Giant Dipper 95th Anniversary Contest opens May 17, 2019 on the coaster’s 95th birthday. The contest will run throughout the summer and close on National Roller Coaster Day, August 16.

The public is invited to share their original Giant Dipper photographs, artwork, or other creative endeavor.  The Grand Prize Winner will receive an Apple MacBook Pro, Bose Soundlink II Bluetooth Speaker, and Mophie PowerStation plus an invitation for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Boardwalk (travel not included). Other prizes for finalists include Boardwalk tickets.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, the Giant Dipper has logged 66 million riders since it first opened in the same location on May 17, 1924.  “The Giant Dipper is our most popular ride, and a favorite of coaster enthusiasts and history buffs,” said Boardwalk archivist Jessie Durant. “Built for $50,000 in just 47 days, the Giant Dipper has been an iconic Santa Cruz landmark for the past 95 years.”

The famous Giant Dipper is the oldest in California, and the 5th oldest roller coaster in the country. It can be seen in many movies including Jordan Peele’s recent blockbuster Us, the 2018 Transformer spinoff Bumblebee, the ’80s vampire classic The Lost Boys, Clint Eastwood’s Sudden Impact, as well as dozens of other feature films.
