The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake in Ohio recycled used mattresses showcasing its sustainability best practices

BUFFALO, NY, 2022-Feb-10 — /Travel PR News/ — The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake in Ohio is showcasing sustainability best practices with its recent lodging upgrades.

The Lodge, where Delaware North has provided lodging, food and beverage and retail services since 2004, replaced 387 mattresses and box springs across the property in early January. Instead of the used mattresses being sent to a landfill, they were recycled.

With the help of Virginia-based DH Companies and Triad Recycling & Energy in Tonawanda, N.Y., the mattresses were completely deconstructed by hand, and each component was separated for processing. The springs are shredded and recycled; the foam is recycled into carpet padding; wood from the box springs is ground up for mulch and the outer shell is shredded and used as an absorbent material.

“About 19,000 pounds of waste was kept out of the landfill, and approximately 47 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) was diverted by making the decision to recycle the mattresses,” said Vicki McMichael, director of compliance and sustainability for Delaware North parks and resorts. “This is a true representation of GreenPath in action, and we thank the entire team at Geneva for their efforts.”

A total of 132 queen mattresses and box springs, 41 king mattresses and 82 king box springs were recycled during the project.

“Diverting our used mattresses from the landfill was a proud moment here at Geneva,” said Kent Welch, director of facilities and GreenPath champion at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
