The Indianapolis International Airport hosts the story of origin and watercolor this spring and summer

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, 2019-Apr-24 — /Travel PR News/ — The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) hosts the story of origin and watercolor this spring and summer as part of the airport’s rotating art exhibition in partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

The works of photographer Bill Rasdell and The Bloomington Watercolor Society push the boundaries of what art can do and where art comes from. Both genres are on display through July 14, 2019.

“These exhibits mirror the diversity and unity we find simultaneously in travel, which connects us to history, beauty and one another through time and place,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez. “We believe art and its expression is an essential part of the customer experience for the more than 9 million people who travel through the Indy airport each year.”

Photographer and digital artist Bill Rasdell places an emphasis on fine art and documentary images influenced by migration and the many ways in which the convergence of cultures can enrich food, religion, language and the arts. At the core of his airport exhibition is his personal study and reflection on the migration of the Israelites to the continent of Africa more than 2,500 years ago — and how that journey ultimately affects contemporary African Jewish societies. The exhibition features images from his travels to visit and document four main groups: Ethopian Jews, the Abayudaya of Uganda, the House of Israel of Sefwi Wiawso in Ghana and the Lemba of Zimbabwe. This exhibition is located in the Concourse B exhibition case.

“Rasdell’s artwork brilliantly shows us the intersection between two diasporic communities, African and Jewish,” says Julia Muney Moore, the Arts Council’s Director of Public Art. “It completely upends popular concepts of what Jewish people look like and where they live. Rasdell is saying that putting people into categories instead of seeing them for who they are is a pointless waste of energy.”

The Bloomington Watercolor Society’s Jacki Frey, Jerome C. Harste, Donna Whitsitt, Nancy Davis Metz, Tricia Heiser Wente, Robert R. Burris, Cathy Korinek and Sara Steffey McQueen will display a collection of 24 paintings. The group of paintings demonstrates the beauty and versatility of the medium, as well as how artists continue to push the boundaries of what watercolor can do. The Indiana artists’ collection is on display in the Ticketing Hall.

Recently Installed Semi-Permanent Art

The Indy airport and the Arts Council of Indianapolis also installed two new semi-permanent art pieces last month. The work of Jen Broemel and H. Ward Miles is on display through December 2020.
