The HKIA Environmental Management Recognition Scheme presented awards to airport tenants for their exceptional effort in environmental management

HONG KONG, 2015-3-30 — /Travel PR News/ — The HKIA Environmental Management Recognition Scheme, organised by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) to recognize the environmental performance of airport tenants, came to a successful finale, with an award presentation ceremony held today. A total of 42 airport tenants were presented with different awards to commend their exceptional effort in environmental management. The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, and Mr. Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the AA.

In his welcoming speech, Mr Lam said, “We are committed to the sustainable development of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). We appreciate the efforts of our retail and restaurant tenants in incorporating green initiatives into their operations and taking active responsibilities in environmental management.”

Mr Wong said, “This Scheme has provided initiatives for airport merchants to strive for outstanding performance in various aspects of environmental management. Participants have to excel in waste management, energy saving, waste water management, air pollution control and noise pollution control in order to be awarded. May I take this opportunity to encourage exchange of ideas and experience sharing among all of us, so that together we can work out the best environmental management approach for the airport.”

Waste Management” has been selected as the theme of the Scheme this year to support the HKSAR Government’s effort to tackle Hong Kong’s waste problems. Airport tenants were also assessed on other environmental aspects include energy efficiency, water efficiency, wastewater management, air pollution control, noise pollution control and other environmental management. Four categories of awards, namely Grand, Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, were granted to the tenants according to the level of environmental performance that they have achieved.

This year, 19 restaurants and 23 retail shops have been awarded because of their good environmental performance. Most of the restaurants have recycled food waste and waste oil, while most of the retail shops only offer shopping bags upon request by customers, used rechargeable batteries and installed energy efficient lighting. Other good practices include reducing the use of packaging materials, and serving take-away utensils only upon customers’ request.

Tenants with excellent performance were selected to meet with the Judging Panel and compete for the Grand Award. The Grand Awards were selected based on their environmental performance, commitment and future plans. The Grand Award winner in the restaurant category is Catalina’s Restaurant, while The Magic of Hong Kong Disneyland scooped the Grand Award in the retail shop category. They have implemented a range of good environmental practices and through developing environmental management plans demonstrated their commitment for future improvement.

The ceremony also featured Ms. Alvina Chan, founder of Alvina Cookery, who demonstrated her experience in turning surplus food into two mouth-watering finger food. The participants of the ceremony also had the chance to taste some finger food refreshment specially designed by Alvina and supplied by Food Angel. HKIA has been collaborating with Food Angel to collect edible surplus food from airport caterers that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. In 2014, 18 tonnes of surplus food was collected from HKIA by Food Angel and used to produce around 21,000 nutritious hot meal boxes for distribution to the underprivileged.
