WASHINGTON, D.C., 2014-2-18 — /travelprnews.com/ — On Thursday, March 27, 2014, The Hay-Adams Author Series will welcome Simon Schama, CBE, Columbia University professor, British historian, award-winning author and documentarian, while dining with guests at The Top of the Hay, the Hotel’s elegant rooftop spaces overlooking the White House.
Early in his career, Schama was a Fellow at Cambridge and Oxford, specializing in the French Revolution where he wrote his first book, Patriots and Liberators, which won the Wolfson History Prize. Subsequent books about Dutch and art history include Two Rothschilds and the Land of Israel, The Embarrassment of Riches, and Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution, which won the 1990 NCR Book Award. He became an art critic for The New Yorker and professor at Columbia University before returning to the UK where he was commissioned to write and present a series of television documentaries on British history called The History of Britain. In 2001, Schama, born in London to Jewish parents, was named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).
In 2003, Schama produced three new books and two television series for BBC and Harpers Collins, which was the biggest advance deal for a television historian. The first book was entitled Rough Crossings: Britain, the Slaves and the American Revolution, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award. In 2006, he returned to writing about art history with a BBC television series and book, Simon Schama’s Power of Art, also shown on PBS in the US. Schama went on to present and write a four-part BBC series called The American Future: A History, a BBC Radio 4 show entitled Baseball and Me, describing his personal support of the Boston Red Sox, as well as a series of 10 talks for BBC Radio 4 called A Point of View. In 2011, BBC commissioned the historian to write and present a five-part series, The Story of the Jews, which broadcast in September 2013.
Hans Bruland, Vice President and General Manager of The Hay-Adams, will host the Author Series, along with Marie Arana, former Washington Post Book World editor. Tickets for the event, held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., are $85 and include a three-course meal, wine, tax and gratuity. A collection of Schama’s books will also be available to purchase.
