CALGARY, 2015-7-24 — /Travel PR News/ — The Calgary Airport Authority welcomes WestJet’s announcement of continued network growth based out of Calgary International Airport (YYC), the airline’s home base for both its mainline and regional carrier. WestJet is bringing on a number of new routes, as well as several increased frequencies on existing routes, which strengthens YYC’s position as Alberta’s international hub for both business and leisure travellers.
Today’s announcement for WestJet’s winter schedule out of YYC includes three brand new sun destinations. There will be four flights per week to Liberia, Costa Rica beginning on December 19; two weekly flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida starting on November 30; and twice-weekly departures to Huatulco, Mexicobeginning December 12. Huatulco will be WestJet’s ninth destination in sunny Mexico. Additionally, WestJet will once again operate its Alberta to Hawaii service with its newest aircraft in the fleet – the Boeing 767-300ER.
In addition to new routes, WestJet announced it will extend winter service on several recently introduced routes including Houston, Yellowknife and Terrace, while increasing frequency on existing routes from Calgary to Penticton, Brandon, Saskatoon, Fort McMurray and more.
“As the largest Canadian hub airport for WestJet, we are excited about the airline’s new routes and expanded services here at YYC, and the success this expansion represents for WestJet,” said Stephan Poirier, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for The Calgary Airport Authority. “Albertans enjoy some of the best air-access in the country through YYC, which serves more than 78 non-stop destinations to a number of business and leisure markets.”
YYC has been WestJet’s home base since the airline’s inception in 1996. Now one of Canada’s largest airlines, WestJet and its regional airline, WestJet Encore, operate an average of 114 flights per day out of YYC.
“Today’s announcement of new destinations, new routes and increased frequencies to and from YYC speaks to the strong relationship between WestJet and the Calgary International Airport,” said Chris Avery, WestJet Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances and Corporate Development. “Calgary remains a key, strategic hub for WestJet, offering travellers non-stop and connecting flights to destinations across our domestic, transborder and international networks.”
