Temporary Closure of Runway 10-28 Scheduled at BWI Marshall Airport

60-Day Closure to Begin August 20

2012-08-23 — /travelprnews.com/ — As part of a multi-year, comprehensive series of airfield improvements, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport will close one of its primary runways for 60 days starting on August 20. Runway 10-28 will be temporarily closed in order to complete a runway reconstruction project.

Runway 15R-33L, BWI Marshall’s other major commercial runway, will remain open and available for airline operations during the work on Runway 10-28. During the temporary closure of Runway 10-28, local residents may notice a change in airline flight patterns near BWI Marshall. As with any major airfield construction project, the exact schedule is dependent on weather conditions.

Over the next several years, BWI Marshall will conduct a number of major airfield rehabilitation projects, along with Runway Safety Area (RSA) improvements. Airports across the country must meet updated Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for RSAs by the end of 2015. RSAs are the surfaces surrounding airport runways that provide important safety margins for arriving and departing aircraft.

The airfield work at BWI Marshall will include runway, taxiway, deicing pad, and hold pad pavement reconstruction, RSA improvements, and the installation, relocation, or upgrade of airfield navigational aids.

Last year, BWI Marshall worked to complete a major first phase of the overall airfield program. In September 2011, the Airport reconstructed the intersection of the two primary commercial runways. That work required the closure of the two major runways for 54-hours over one weekend.

Runway 10-28 has been closed periodically throughout the summer in order to prepare for the planned 60-day closure.
