TAJ HOTELS, RESORTS AND PALACES WINS TRAVEL + LEISURE 2012 GLOBAL VISION AWARD

MUMBAI, 2012-10-26 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Taj brand has long been a leader in environmental conservation, cultural preservation and community building, and is now recognized by Travel + Leisure (T+L) as a Global Vision Award winner. Taj trains more than 2,000 underprivileged youths in hospitality sectors such as housekeeping and restaurant service and has spent $2.3 million on goods produced by local NGO’s, women’s collectives, and small scale entrepreneurs. These efforts often benefit disenfranchised groups, including people with disabilities and victims of sexual exploitation.

“Travel with a purpose is at the heart of T+L’s annual Global Vision Awards, which shine a spotlight on the hotels, travel companies, and community-based initiatives that serve as powerful forces for good in protecting what is irreplaceable in the world: our cultural and natural resources,” says T+L editor in chief, Nancy Novogrod.

Long before corporate sustainability became fashionable, Tata companies were giving back to local communities, the environment, social and welfare causes. Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata was keen to avoid patchwork philanthropy, preferring to pursue activities that delivered sustained developmental impact. “In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in the business but in fact the very purpose of its existence,” Jamsetji Tata (1839 – 1904.)

In addition to listing the merits of each winner, T+L also suggests to “Take the Trip” that represents the spirit of these travel awards. The goal is twofold: to encourage mindfulness about natural and cultural resources, and to bring one face to face with the wonders of the world. For Taj: “Scout for Indian bison at the Mahua Kothi safari lodge in Madhya Pradesh, India, where Taj reintroduced a herd in 2011.”
