Carrier updates sustainability strategy to focus on carbon, circularity, and collaboration
(IN SHORT) Southwest Airlines has announced its updated sustainability strategy, “Nonstop to Net Zero,” with the aim of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and promoting sustainability in air travel. The strategy focuses on three pillars: carbon reduction, circularity, and collaboration. Key goals include electrifying 50% of ground support equipment by 2030, saving 50 million incremental gallons of jet fuel by 2025, and reducing single-use plastics from inflight service by 50% by 2025. The airline also plans to replace 10% of total jet fuel consumption with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030 and reduce its energy utilization index at corporate headquarters by 50% by 2035. Southwest has already taken significant steps, including signing a 20-year agreement to purchase SAF, launching tools for customers to purchase SAF claims and carbon offsets, and collaborating with GE Research and Boeing on sustainability initiatives.
