Carrier establishes long-term strategic relationship with SAF producer
(IN SHORT) Southwest Airlines has entered into a significant offtake agreement with USA BioEnergy for up to 680 million gallons of neat sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Over a 20-year term, once blended with conventional jet fuel, this SAF could yield the equivalent of 2.59 billion gallons of net-zero fuel, resulting in a reduction of 30 million metric tons of CO2 emissions. Southwest plans to commence purchasing SAF from USA BioEnergy’s facility near Bon Wier, Texas, starting in 2028. The agreement also establishes a long-term strategic partnership, enabling Southwest to potentially acquire an additional 180 million gallons of SAF annually from future production facilities. The collaboration aligns with Southwest’s goal to replace 10 percent of its jet fuel consumption with SAF by 2030 and contributes to its ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Southwest recognizes the importance of commercially viable SAF in its sustainability strategy and is actively fostering relationships throughout the aviation sector to advance its carbon reduction objectives.
