2013-02-18 — /travelprnews.com/ — Sofia Airport recorded 15 % cargo increase in January 2013

Cargo

In the first month this year, Sofia Airport recorded a 15 % growth in cargo volumes compared to January 2012, and this is a total of 1 360 t of handled cargo and mail.

The cargo volumes carried on scheduled international flights increased by 3%, and those on special cargo flights went up by 28% on annual basis.

Passengers

265 127 was the total number of passengers handled at Sofia Airport in the first month of 2013 against 264 225 for 2012 (+0,3%).

97% increase recorded the domestic passenger traffic compared to the same period last year when Varna Airport was closed for repairs.

Over this first month, the number of tourists on winter charters was similar to that in January previousyear. 1 600 travellers more, mainly from Russia and Ukraine, used foreign airlines.

The number of passengers on scheduled international flights was 227 818 compared to 231 014 for 2012 (-1%).

Austrian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Bulgaria Air, easyJet, Wizz Air started the year with the best monthly results in terms of growth in total carried passengers.

Flights

In January 2013, Sofia Airport handled in total 3 157 departing and arriving aircraft, compared to 3 447 in the same month of 2012 (-8%).

The smaller number of flights can be attributed to the terminated flights of the Ukrainian AeroSvit and the reduced frequency of operation on some destinations.

Increase of 15% was accounted for the cargo flights, while the aircraft movements in the sector of Business Aviation kept the previous year level.
