SFO Museum: Rarely seen images of the hugely popular aeronautical programs presented at San Francisco’s 1915 World’s Fair are on display

New photography exhibition highlights early aviation at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition

SAN FRANCISCO,  2015-2-23 — /Travel PR News/ — Rarely seen images of the hugely popular aeronautical programs presented at San Francisco’s 1915 World’s Fair are on view at SFO Museum. Twenty-one recently created black and white gelatin silver prints made from the vintage glass plate negatives of the Cardinell-Vincent Company depict famous birdmen of the day, including Lincoln Beachey and Art Smith who thrilled millions with their aerial acrobatics. For hundreds of thousands of fairgoers, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition provided their first glimpse of an airplane at the dawn of the age of flight. Many also paid the considerable sum of $10.00 for an air tour over San Francisco Bay in a floatplane made by the Loughead brothers, who later changed the spelling of their name to Lockheed. A one-fifth scale model of their historic aircraft is also on view.

Fancy Flying: Aviation at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition is part of the citywide centennial celebration. Visit the 100th Anniversay Panama-Pacific International Exposition website.

SFO Museum
SFO Museum was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the unique cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public. The Museum was granted initial accreditation from the American Association of Museums in 1999, reaccredited in 2005, and has the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. Today, SFO Museum features twenty-five galleries throughout the Airport terminals displaying a rotating schedule of art, history, science, and cultural exhibitions, as well as the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, a permanent collection dedicated to the history of commercial aviation.
