Weekend Closure to Accomplish Federally-Mandated Runway Safety Areas
SAN FRANCISCO, 2013-02-08 — /travelprnews.com/ — The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced a temporary weekend runway closure in February to carry out construction activity for federally-mandated Runway Safety Areas. The closure is scheduled for:
This closure will allow crews to construct new threshold areas, lighting systems, and navigational aids to comply with federal Runway Safety Area (RSA) requirements. Originally planned for January, this work was postponed due to inclement weather. Scheduled dates remain subject to change based on weather conditions. The overall Runway Safety Area project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015.
During this closure, the arrival rate at SFO may be reduced from 60 aircraft per hour to 30 aircraft per hour. Delays for flights originating within a two-hour radius of SFO could occur during peak travel times between 9:00am-12:00pm and 6:00pm-9:00pm. Travelers are strongly encouraged to contact their airline regarding potential delays.
