Its been a period of celebration for Serena Hotels. Not only have a number of its properties across East Africa enjoyed significant refurbishments – but the group won an impressive seven Eco Warrior Awards in October for their sustainability efforts.
Maureen Okore, Serena’s new Regional Marketing Director and Joyce Wangui, Regional Sales Director were delighted to attend WTM in London in November to share some of the latest Serena news with agents, tour operators and travel writers.
Serena shines at Eco Tourism Kenya Awards
Serena Hotels Africa was delighted to scoop an incredible seven Eco Warrior Awards in Nairobi on 17 October 2024. These awards are championed by Ecotourism Kenya which established Kenya’s Eco-Rating Certification Scheme, with the theme for 2024 being ’Realising Sustainable Development Goals through Sustainable Tourism’.

Serena Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa, Kenya
A new 280 kpw Solar PV plant has been installed to reduce carbon emissions and embrace cleaner, greener energy. Recently completed a significant soft refurbishing of all public areas giving a fresh look whilst preserving the authentic Swahili coastal atmosphere. In all guest rooms, the bedsides now have universal plug sockets with USB ports as well as electronic locks on the doors. The WIFI has boosted connectivity, and a new IPTV system has been rolled out for enhanced in-room entertainment. The new padel tennis court is a big hit with both in-house guests and walk ins.
Sweetwaters Serena Camp in Kenya
This tented camp has also seen some recent investment to uplift the guest experience including Arabic showers, new thatched Makuti roofs and comfortable new mattresses and lovely new lamp shades in the Morani suites. All suites, including standard tents, now have hair dryers. Experience wise, guests will love the new cycling and archery activities on offer – not to mention the jacuzzi at the swimming pool.
Serena Mivumo River Lodge in Tanzania
This lodge, beautifully located overlooking the mighty Rufiji River, has enjoyed a refurbishment of all guest room balconies. A number of the guest rooms have been rethatched and all suites have new air conditioners. A new Massage/Spa bathroom and toilet has also been built.
Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp in the Serengeti, Tanzania
These beautiful, tented suites have enjoyed some TLC recently to ensure a luxurious guest experience under canvas. All bedsides now have universal plug sockets with USB charging points for guest convenience. A new driveway and guest drop off point has also been added for smoother access.
