SAS Embraer E195-E2 Acquisition Accelerates Sustainable Fleet Renewal and Network Expansion

(IN SHORT) SAS has placed an order for 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, plus purchase rights for ten more, marking its largest direct jet purchase since 1996 and committing nearly US$4 billion. Deliveries begin in late 2027 and span four years. The E195-E2 promises significant gains in fuel efficiency, noise reduction, and passenger comfort, powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1900G engines and certified for up to 50 percent SAF blends today (with full SAF certification imminent). SAS CEO Anko van der Werff highlighted the jets’ role in expanding connectivity and lowering operating costs, while Embraer’s Arjan Meijer praised the aircraft’s operational and environmental advantages. Supported by Skyworks Holding, the order accelerates SAS’s fleet modernization and sustainability goals. Additionally, SAS led the industry in on-time performance globally in April and May 2025 (Cirium).

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, Sweden, 2025-Jul-1 — /Travel PR News/ — Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has signed a landmark agreement to purchase 45 Embraer E195-E2 jets, with options to acquire ten more—its biggest direct order from a manufacturer since 1996. Valued at roughly US$4 billion (excluding options), the deal underpins SAS’s long-term fleet renewal plan, aimed at boosting fuel efficiency, cutting emissions, and supporting growth from its Copenhagen hub and across Scandinavia and beyond.

Deliveries of the first E195-E2s are slated to start in late 2027 and will continue over an approximately four-year period. “This is a defining moment for SAS,” said President & CEO Anko van der Werff. “The Embraer E195-E2 marries top-tier performance with outstanding fuel economy and passenger comfort. It’s pivotal to our growth strategy and improving connections throughout our network. We’ve chosen wisely, and this investment shows our confidence in the future.”

The mid-sized E195-E2 will complement SAS’s existing fleet by enabling more frequent services, greater route flexibility, and lower operating costs. It has already demonstrated compatibility with 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and, while current blends cap at 50 percent, full SAF certification is expected soon.

Arjan Meijer, President & CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, added: “We’re delighted to deepen our partnership with SAS. The E195-E2 is today’s quietest single-aisle jet, delivering 29 percent better fuel efficiency and cutting noise by 62 percent versus its predecessor. It’s a game-changer for performance, economy, and passenger experience.”

Equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1900G geared-turbofan engines, the new aircraft will help SAS reduce fuel burn, CO₂ emissions, and noise, reinforcing the airline’s role in lowering aviation’s environmental impact. This order—supported by Skyworks Holding—marks another milestone in SAS’s transformation toward a modern, sustainable fleet and an enhanced travel experience.

In related news, SAS ranked No. 1 for on-time performance among 660 global airlines in April and May 2025, according to Cirium.
