Rehabilitation of Runway 18/36 at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport to begin on April 28th until the end of July 2014

Winnipeg, 2014-04-28 — /Travel PR News/ — As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver and operate excellent facilities and services for our community, Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. (WAA) is coordinating the rehabilitation of the north-south Runway 18/36 at the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.

The runway rehabilitation project will occur over a period of approximately 14 weeks, and is scheduled to begin on April 28th, 2014 and continue until the end of July 2014. The project includes rehabilitation of the 11,000 foot (3,350 metre) asphalt Runway 18/36. Rehabilitation activities include complete asphalt pavement resurfacing, removal and reinstallation of runway centerline and touchdown zone lights, and localized land drainage sewer repairs.

In maintaining our commitment to stakeholders, the runway closure during this period will require the rerouting of all air traffic (arrivals and departures) to the northwest-southeast runway (13/31) for the duration of the project. The following neighbourhoods will experience an increase in air traffic during this period: Lakeside (west), St. James (east), Tuxedo (east), River Heights, Wolseley (west), Fort Rouge (west), Fort Whyte (northeast), Fort Garry-Riverview, Riel, Fort Richmond, St. Vital, Southdale and Seine River.

The following neighbourhoods will notice a corresponding reduction in air traffic during the project: St. James (former Silver Heights area), Assiniboia (east), Kirkfield Park (east), Charleswood (east), Tuxedo (west), Tyndall Park (west), Lakeside (east) and The Maples (west).

This $8.2 million construction contract was awarded to Manitoba-based Maple Leaf Construction Ltd., and will contribute to our economy by employing local construction workers during the project.

With an ongoing objective to be a responsible member of our community, WAA is sensitive to the environment of neighbourhoods surrounding the airport and has a program in place to mitigate and reduce noise disturbances.
