(PRESS RELEASE) Sydney, Ausralia, 2024-Oct-2 — /Travel PR News/ — Qantas has launched its first Airbus A380 flights to Johannesburg, marking a historic moment as the airline operates its Superjumbo to Africa for the first time. The A380 will fly up to six times a week, adding 130,000 seats annually between Australia and South Africa. This upgrade also reintroduces First Class on the route, offering 14 exclusive suites, and doubles the availability of Premium Economy seats.

The aircraft features a luxurious upper deck lounge for First and Business Class passengers, complete with booth-style seating, a self-service bar, and the option to order drinks and snacks. This route expansion builds on Qantas’ long history with South Africa, dating back to its first flight in 1948.

In addition to the new A380 service, Qantas has partnered with South African airline Airlink, expanding its codeshare network to nine domestic destinations, including Cape Town and Durban. The partnership will also allow Qantas Frequent Flyers to earn and use points on Airlink flights. Qantas aims to relaunch direct Perth-Johannesburg flights by mid-2025.

Cam Wallace, Qantas International CEO, emphasized the strong demand for flights to Johannesburg and highlighted the airline’s 72-year history of flying to South Africa. He noted that the new A380 flights and the codeshare partnership with Airlink will enhance connectivity and support tourism and trade between the continents.
