Philadelphia Welcomes Lori Andrews, Leading Expert On Fast-Changing Landscapes Of Health, Law And Social Media

Philadelphia, PA, 2012-10-26 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress, a division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau(PCVB), will host an invitation-only event to connect life sciences and hospitality professionals with guest speaker Lori Andrews, JD, a professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law and director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology. Former chair of the ethics advisory committee to the Human Genome Project, Andrews is a legal expert in bioethics, with a case in front of the Supreme Court that questions whether genes should be patented. She was named by The National Law Journal as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America and awarded the American College of Law and Medicine’s highest honor, Honorary Fellow for “distinguished achievement in the field of legal medicine.”

Andrews will address issues on genetics, law and social media. Her latest book, I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Media and the Death of Privacy, has a Greater Philadelphia connection with the inclusion of a case study on the 2010 “Webgate” scandal – the Robbins v. Lower Merion School District – a federal class action lawsuit brought in February 2010 on behalf of students of two high schools in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suburbs.

The event will take place at the National Constitution Center. This is the 225th anniversary of the U.S Constitution and the rights it creates are still relevant to life sciences and other new technologies.

Andrews is also an award-winning writer who has published a wide array of magazine articles, as well as 11 nonfiction books, the last three of which have earned her appearances on “Oprah.” A frequent guest on “Nightline,” “60 Minutes,” “CBS Morning News” and various other programs, she is often interviewed about genetic technologies. She is also the author of three mysteries set in a genetics lab.

Andrews will be introduced by Russel Kaufman, M.D., President and CEO of The Wistar Institute, and chair of the Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress. Earlier this month, Kaufman was named “Life Sciences CEO of the Year” by The Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress connects the tri-state’s (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware) life sciences leaders representing medical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, higher education, research, venture capital, and the health care industries to collaborate in promoting the Philadelphia region as “America’s Life Sciences Meetings Destination.” More than half of the meetings and conventions that take place in Philadelphia are related to the life sciences.
