Airport warns of e-mail scam using fake SFO account

SAN FRANCISCO, 2013-03-01 — /travelprnews.com/ — The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is alerting the public to a pet scam which may use a false e-mail address claiming to represent SFO.

The pet scam, which recently has involved the “Yorkie” breed of dogs, often begins on websites offering to give away pets. The scammer will offer to transport the pet by air, provided that the unwitting consumer pays a portion of the airfare or other related costs, such as crates, insurance or vaccines. The scammer will then send an e-mail demanding additional fees, which falsely claims to represent an animal “Health Care Department” at SFO.  The Airport does not operate any such departments, nor is the e-mail account used in these scams associated with SFO.

Consumers can obtain information about internet fraud, including pet scams, from the Federal Trade Commission’s website, www.ftc.gov, or the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
