Oslo Airport notes record number of passengers
2013-01-14 — /travelprnews.com/ — In 2012, 22.1 million passengers travelled via Oslo Airport. This is 4.6 % or 980 000 more than in 2011 and is the highest number of passengers ever to travel through Oslo Airport.
Growth was greatest on international routes, increasing by more than 680 000 travellers or 6.1 %. International charter traffic boasted a particularly large upswing, growing 10.7 %.
In domestic traffic, Oslo Airport saw a total increase of 2.9 %, or just over 290 000, in 2012. For example, boosted by Northern Lights tourism, traffic between Oslo and Tromsø Airport exceeded one million travellers for the first time ever.
The number of aircraft movements (take-offs and landings) in 2012 was 230 432, an increase of 3.1 % and close to matching the record set in 2008.
While the month of December saw a slight decline in domestic traffic, international charter traffic grew by 11 %. This shows that many Norwegians now choose to celebrate Christmas in warmer climates.
“The increase in 2012 is due to the fact that Norwegians are very fond of travelling, and that Norway has become a more attractive destination. In addition, purchasing power is good in the Norwegian domestic market, creating a huge demand for air travel,” says Nic Nilsen, managing director of Oslo Airport.
“It is particularly gratifying to see that some of the new direct routes to exciting destinations are helping to boost the traffic figures at Oslo Airport. We are growing steadily and are approaching the limit of what we can handle with the current infrastructure. We are working continuously on adaptations of the current terminal along with construction of the new terminal so that passengers will have a good travel experience at Oslo Airport,” concludes Nilsen.
