Astonishing growth in Brazilian visitor numbers kept total international arrivals to Canada on the up in November 2012, says CTC Tourism Snapshot

2013-02-01 — /travelprnews.com/ — Travellers from around the world reached for the skies again in November 2012. According to the Tourism Snapshot hot off the presses from the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department, more than 781,000 international travellers came to Canada, a 1% year-on-year rise.

Here are some more key stats:

  • The Brazil market blazed a trail in November 2012: arrivals to Canada rose an awesome (in the truest sense of the word) 65% on the same month in 2011.
  • That Canada feel-good factor made its way to the Mexico market, too, which posted a solid 4% year-on-year gain in visitor numbers to Canada in November 2012.
  • The US market completed a hat-trick of good news from the Americas for Canada travel in November 2012: a 5% acceleration in auto travel left a 4% drop in air arrivals in the slow lane, culminating in an overall 1% rise in visitor numbers across the 49th parallel.
  • Year-to-date November 2012, our American cousins have enjoyed 11.1 million overnight trips to Canada, up 2% on 2011.
  • Although the Australia calendar pointed to summer, increasing numbers of Aussies fancied a taste of Canadian winter in November 2012, with trip numbers surging 9% on 2011.
  • Mixed news from Europe: the France market rekindled its amour for Canada in November 2012, posting a healthy 8% boost in overnight trips and a record number for November.
  • Meanwhile, the Germany and UK markets could not shake off their torpor, witnessing 4% and 8% declines in trip numbers to Canada respectively.
  • CTC’s Asian markets had a glass-half-full, glass-half-empty set of results in November 2012. While the Japan (4%) and China (3%) markets were pleased to see more consumers head to Canada, South Korea (-3%) and India (-8%) both had setbacks.
  • The waves of Canadian outbound travel continued to pound the borders. November 2012 saw Canadians take 2.3 million trips outside their country, a 6% year-on-year increase.
  • Year-to-date November 2012, Canadians have had more than 30 million international adventures, up 6% on 2011.
  • Canadian optimism wobbled again in November 2012. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada edged down 0.8 points to 80.3.
  • Americans remained quietly bullish in November 2012 after their presidential elections. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index shinnied up the ladder to 73.7, up 0.6 points on October.

The Tourism Snapshot examines statistics and travel trends up to Nov. 30, 2012, in CTC’s—and partners’—key global markets.
